Health first, because it takes longest
Register with a GP as soon as you arrive. You do not need proof of address, an NHS number or any particular immigration status to register — practices sometimes ask, but the rules do not require it. A lot of people go without care for months because they assume otherwise.
Dentists are harder. NHS dental capacity is stretched nationally and Bedfordshire is no exception. Register with any practice taking NHS patients even if you have no current problem, because the list only gets longer. For emergencies, NHS 111 can direct you to urgent dental care whether or not you are registered.
Pharmacists can now treat a number of common conditions directly without a GP appointment, which is genuinely useful when the surgery is booked up for a fortnight.
Worth knowing. If you take regular medication, bring enough to cover the gap. Getting a repeat prescription set up with a new surgery is not instant.
Money and ID
The chicken-and-egg problem of UK life: you need an address for a bank account and often a bank account for an address. Some banks accept a letter from your employer or landlord as proof of address — ask before assuming they will not. Digital banks are usually faster to open than high street ones.
If you are sending money abroad, compare the exchange rate margin and not just the headline transfer fee. The margin is where the real cost sits, and over a year the difference between providers is substantial.
Where to live
Bedford town centre, Kempston and the villages along the A421 are the obvious options for anyone working at the site. Queens Park and Cauldwell are the cheapest parts of town within walking distance of the centre; Bedford St Johns station sits in Cauldwell and is on the line that stops at Kempston Hardwick.
The villages on that same railway line — Stewartby, Millbrook, Lidlington, Ridgmont — are consistently overlooked because people search by town name rather than by railway line, which keeps them cheaper than they should be.
Getting your bearings
Bedford is a proper market town rather than a commuter dormitory. The Embankment along the Great Ouse is the best thing about it and the first place to go on a decent evening. The High Street and Harpur Centre cover the everyday shopping; the retail parks on the edge of town cover the rest.
It is genuinely diverse for its size — the Italian community from the brickworks era, plus long-established Polish, South Asian and Caribbean communities among others. If you have relocated from outside the UK, there is a reasonable chance there is already a community here.
